Each week, we interview colleagues here to learn more about them to better introduce them to their clients (or would-be clients). Here are our questions and her answers.
MCS Questions and Answers
Why did you decide to work with the MCS Group and what do you like most about working here/there?
I knew I was in the right place when I met Julie, the owner of MCS Counseling, and heard her say that she wants all her therapists to love coming to work. That’s how I feel every day at MCS. Julie provides a supportive environment of highly professional admin staff, supervision, and weekly peer consultation with co-workers, allowing her therapists to focus on productive, long-term relationships with their clients.
Why did you become a therapist?
Answer: I feel honored to witness my clients’ courage and resiliency as they learn to recognize their source of suffering and grow into higher functioning. This career also allows me to engage in my own growth process; I continue to learn along with my clients.
What do you find most helpful about your approach therapy?
Attachment therapy reinforces the bedrock therapeutic skill of establishing a secure, supportive relationship with clients who can then transfer these relationship skills to others in their lives. Narrative therapy provides space for clients to examine their personal stories, often negative, and revise them to incorporate new possibilities, strengths, and a positive identity.
Give one or two anonymous but specific examples of a client who has benefitted from this model?
I’m encouraged when clients begin to understand old, unhelpful communication and behavioral patterns replicated in current relationships. A client who reacts to his wife in the same way as his mother can learn new strategies to improve both of these relationships.
